Shropshire's Ashley Chesters poised to challenge at the top

Shropshire golf ace Ashley Chesters is in the leading pack going into the penultimate day of the English Open Amateur Stroke Play Championship.

The Hawkstone Park ace made the cut after carding a two-under-par 71 at Seaton Carew Golf Club yesterday.

Now five under par after 36 holes of the four-day event, the reigning European amateur champion tees off on the third day in joint fourth. He is one shot off third place and four adrift of the overnight leader: Ryan Evans of Wellingborough.

Llanymynech's Basil Griffiths, meanwhile,finished tied 24th at the Welsh Open Senior Championships after carding a final-round 77.

Griffiths's eight over par score saw him finish the three-day tournament at The Glamorganshire with a combined final score of 277, 23 over par.

Meanwhile Wrekin's Will Enefer was today contesting the final of the Irish Boys Amateur Open Championships. He made the cut for today's fourth round following a one-over-par third round at Thurles Golf Club in County Tipperary which put him tied 10th on the leaderboard,

In the European Challenge Tour, Ludlow's Oliver Farr is set to make the latter stages of the Scottish Hydro Challenge in Aviemore. Farr carded a three-under-par first-round 68.
