Bridgnorth golfer David James needs big round

Bridgnorth golfer David James was looking for a big round this afternoon to keep his dream of reaching The Open alive.

James was in the middle of the pack approaching the end of his first round in final qualifying at Woburn, tied for 29th place on one over par.

And with only the top three qualifying for golf's most prestigious tournament, it left him facing an uphill struggle in the afternoon's second round.

Ludlow's Oliver Farr was better placed in 11th after carding a one under par round of 71 to sit four shots behind Australia's Richard Green, who raced into the lead after birdying five of the opening 12 holes. Farr, 26, will be desperate to avoid the same fate as last year, when he missed out on qualification by one shot.

A total of 280 players were today locked in competition at four venues across the country, all hoping to earn their chance to compete against the world's elite players for the Claret Jug at Royal Liverpool later this month.
