DQ sees Idris through to Junior's last eight
Idris Mohammed has been told to box clever through the next round of the England Junior Championship after a disqualification ended his last clash.
The Wellington Boxing Academy had got on top before his opponent was chucked out in the last round of their clash,
Mohammed and Aqib Fiaz, from Northside in Manchester, met to decide who advanced to the national pre-quarter finals at the Emerald Club in Small Heath, Birmingham.
The contest, which took place at 60kg in the combined boxers born in 1999 and 2000 category, had been brought forward 24 hours.
A scrappy first two rounds saw both warned by the referee for holding, with the man in the middle taking action in the last session.
Mohammed had changed tact and parked Fiaz behind the jab, as his confused adversary continued to bomb forward and hang on when they clashed on the inside.
Fiaz pulled that stunt one time too many and failed to see the final bell with Mohammed having moved ahead on the cards, in any case.
The 15-year-old, a pupil at Ercall Wood Technology College, will now travel to Croxteth Sports Centre in Liverpool on Sunday for the next phase.
He will take on Scouser Kieron Sutton, who represents Wirral Community, and is working on getting his game plan spot on in their Mill Lane gym this week.
Trainer and fellow Wellington boxer Aroon Fiaz said: "They are both come forward fighters and got tied up a lot, which the referee certainly wasn't happy with.
"We didn't have a problem with the disqualification for the warning for Idris, either, but he had come out of that by the third.
"As soon as he stepped off and pinged him on the way in, it was a different fight. His fitness then started to show, as he landed the cleaner punches.
"We've heard this lad is a short, stocky fighter so we are working on what's best to combat that. Idris has a beautiful jab and he should use it wherever possible."
Travelling with them to Merseyside this weekend is club-mate Husan Hussain, who has his first outing at 42kg after a series of walk overs.
The Hagley Learning Community pupil, also 15, has been paired with Croxteth's own Anthony Rollinson for his championship debut.
The winner will then advance to the semi-finals and possibly the final, which takes place over two days at Ponds Forge in Sheffield on March 21 and 22.
Fiaz said: "Husan can't wait to get in there and I think he will do well. He's quick and sharp, has good feet and can box at angles."
Donnington's Ryan Tyrer missed out on a spot at 52kg last weekend after a unanimous points loss, undertaking his first bout in the tournament.
