Chesters eyes history before turning pro

The Hawkstone Park ace is making his debut in the 'amateurs' Ryder Cup' against the USA at Royal Lytham and St Annes tomorrow and Sunday.

And he revealed that the Great Britain and Ireland team have already had their pep talk from captain Nigel Edwards about regaining the trophy.

The 26-year-old said: "He has been saying to us that it is one thing getting picked for the Walker Cup.

"But if you want to be remembered, or you want to go down in history, then you have got to go to the Walker Cup – and win it.

"There is no point just saying 'I got selected to play in it' if you don't play well and try to win. It would be great to win it."

Chesters has already written his own piece of history, finishing 12th in the Open.

And, while that stunning performance was the biggest thing in his career thus far, the Walker Cup rates alongside it.

He said: "It is up there and there will be a lot of people coming from Hawkstone Park to watch. It is not too far away for them, probably just a couple of hours.

"It is nice to have that support and to see people in the crowd that you know. Playing in front of people you know calms me down a little bit really.

"I'm always nervous when I play, even in small things. When there are a lot of people there I am sure there will be quite a few nerves, but I am probably used to that by now.

"It is what we practise for, it is what I want to do for a living so it's nothing to be scared of."

Chesters is due to turn professional after the event and admitted as much after an initial side-step.

He said: "I'm just trying to play as well as I can this weekend and then I'll sort the rest out once I have done this. But he later admitted: "It'll be the last thing I play as an amateur."

Among the American ranks is Jordan Niebrugge, who tied for sixth in the Open., but Chesters is not worrying about potential opponents.

He added: "They are all good players and whoever you get drawn against you will have to play well to win."
