The second national tournament on the unpaid calendar for 2016 commences with the opening West Midlands phase,

Two weight divisions are separated by an age range, with fighters born in either 2000 or 2001 entering Class A or B.

It comes hot on the heels of the Youth tournament, which culminates with finals weekend at the Magna Centre in Rotherham over three days from tomorrow.

Hadley's Akash Tuqir, representing Merridale in Wolverhampton, and Wellington Boxing Academy's Idris Mohammed are still in the running for national titles.

Their journeys began at Donnington who staged the first bells of that event, too, at the Telford district's Sports & Social Club on Turreff Avenue.

The same venue welcomes the start of the juniors with the home club entering Bradley Thompson, Harrison Cutler and John Price into proceedings.

Thompson progresses from the Schools - where he reached the national final last year - at 42kg, with Cutler at 60kg in the 2000 line-up. Price will be at 60kg as a 2001 entrant.

Donnington will also stage a 15-bout club show the following Saturday afternoon, which gets underway from 2pm.

Doors open for the juniors at 10am, where fighters will be weighing in until 12pm, with the first bouts to start from 12.30pm.

Entry is £10 for adults and £5 for children and concessions, with everyone paying on the door, for both of the bills.
