Donnington duo will enjoy home comforts

Donnington's England Junior Championship duo will enjoy home advantage - and won't come back into the competition until the West Midlands final.

They are the host club for the next two weekends as the regional semi-finals and then deciders take place at the Telford district's Sports & Social Club.

The second national tournament on the unpaid calendar for 2016 continues with two divisions separated by age, one encompassing 2000-2001 born entrants and another solely for 2001.

The home twosome will benefit from a bye this Sunday before fighting for a place in the national stages seven days later, writes Craig Birch.

Donnington's Bradley Thompson and John Price are both still involved, as are Wellington Boxing Academy's Hasnain Javed and Shayan Hussain.

Thompson is the only one to have taken part in the competition so far, at the same venue on Turreff Avenue last week.

He's progressed from the Schools for this season - where he reached the national final last year - at 42kg, coming up from 34kg after a growth spurt.

He defeated Droitwich's Clarence Hall unanimously on points to progress in the 2001 ranks and will now go up against Mohammed Ali, from Hall Green in Birmingham.

Donnington's Harrison Cutler was eliminated at 60kg (2001) the same day he saw off Hall, going down unanimously to Tamworth's George Hulme.

They are again represented at 60kg in the 2000-2001 category by Price, who awaits his first bout against Solihull's Joshua Da Silva.

Wellington's Javed will walk over the area rounds without lacing on the gloves, with no opponent for him at 44kg.

Hussain will attempt to claim West Midlands honours next weekend against the capable Ellis Truman, from the Second City, at 57kg.

Club-mate and namesake Hamza Hussain has already bowed out at 50kg on a split decision to Owen Brown, from Warley in the Black Country.

Doors open for the two events at 10am, where the combatants will be weighing in until 12pm, with the first bouts to start from 12.30pm.

Entry is £10 for adults and £5 for children and concessions, with everyone paying on the door, for both bills.
