Four-midable Shropshire quartet left in Juniors

Shropshire has staged all three regional rounds, with Tristan Davies' gym again the hosts at the Telford district's Sports & Social Club on Turreff Avenue.

And they are pinning their hopes on Bradley Thompson and John Price, who could both progress on their own turf, writes Craig Birch.

The second national tournament on the unpaid calendar for 2016 continues with two divisions separated by age, one encompassing 2000-2001 born entrants and another solely for 2001.

Area honours are on offer along with a place in the first national stages, the pre quarter-finals, on Sunday afternoon with 18 bouts scheduled in total.

Wellington Boxing Academy also still have Shayan Hussain in the reckoning, but Hasnain Javed bowed out last weekend.

Raheem Mohammed, coached by Telford's Khalid Hussain out of Merridale in Wolverhampton, is also from Wellington.

Donnington's interest begins in the 2001 only 'cadet' class with Thompson, the only one of the quartet still involved to have taken part in the competition.

He's progressed from the Schools for this season - where he reached the national final last year - at 42kg, coming up from 34kg after a growth spurt.

He defeated Droitwich's Clarence Hall unanimously on points two weeks ago. He sat out last weekend on a bye as did next opponent Mohammed Ali, from Hall Green in Birmingham.

Javed couldn't join him after a 44kg exit to Solihull's Ismael Khattab, who had his hand raised by majority points decision after a scrappy affair.

Khattab is back at Donnington on Sunday but could have it tough against Charles Dunne, who is trained by former British middleweight champion Wayne Elcock.

Mohammed has an opportunity to progress at 48kg when he takes on Anthony Wilson, from O'Dells in Birmingham.

Javed's club-mate Shayan Hussain comes in fresh after a break, due to opponent Birmingham City's Mickey-Lee Broughton no showing their area semi-final.

Hussain will now continue his 57kg campaign against Atherstone's Jack Booker, as his club's last hope in the competition.

Price completes the quartet in the 2000-01 category at 60kg and will step through the ropes with Solihull's Joshua Da Silva.

Doors open to the venue at 10am, where the combatants will be weighing in until 12pm, with the first bouts to start from 12.30pm.

Entry is £10 for adults and £5 for children and concessions, with everyone paying on the door.
