S & H finish eighth in the Midlands

Shropshire & Herefordshire failed to make home advantage count as they finished eighth in the Midland qualifier of the English County Championships.

Sixty of the region's top amateurs took part in the contest at Shrewsbury Golf Club.

Warwickshire took the honours after 36 holes of strokeplay action where all six scores from each individual player counted towards the county's overall total.

S & H were last after the morning action but did improve in the afternoon with Tom Kerr hitting a level par round of 70 and Sean McCarthy a 71.

Three competitors went round in 64 – a course record for Shrewsbury.
