Development boxing comes to Donnington

Championship boxing returns to Shropshire tomorrow and for three weekends in a row as they whittle down to the area finals.

Donnington Boxing Club are the hosts of the England Development Championships up until the national stages,

The West Midlands phase of the competition begins at the district's Sports & Social Centre, Turreff Avenue, with box-offs at the weights on Sunday if required.

The tournament and venue will then continue on two successive Sundays until October 2, where West Midlands champions will be crowned.

Both the junior and senior ranks will take place simultaneously this year, in an event especially designed to showcase novice boxers.

The juniors, all featuring fighters of between two to 10 bouts of experience, will be divided into two age ranges by weight. Class A is for boxers born in 2001, while Class B is for 2000.

There will also be a female juniors, using the same age and weight divisions for girls who have stepped through the ropes competitively up to six times.

The seniors is for age 17 and upwards and divided by experience and weights, with Class A for 2-10 bouts and Class B for 11-20 contests.

Donnington will enter two of their members into the seniors, with Michael Porter and Chris Blase both going into Class A. Porter will feature at 64kg, while Blase is at 69kg.

The home gym are also preparing for their club show at the same place on Saturday October 8, where a fight night will feature their top prospects.

Liam Davies, Bradley Thompson, Macauley Owen, Ryan Tyrer and Harrison Cutler will all get a run-out before the Clubs for Young People Championships start at the end of October.

Spectators are invited to all of the boxing on offer at Donnington, including the Development action. Entry is £10 for adults and £5 for children and concessions, payable on the door.

Tomorrow's and the subsequent Sunday's fighters will weigh in between 10am and 12pm, when doors open to the public for a 1pm start. The club show starts at 8pm, with the weigh in at 7pm.
