Tony Jones gets Conor Benn's last opponent

Telford's Tony Jones will tackle one of only two men to take Conor Benn the distance as a professional on Friday's fight night.

The Shropshire boxer will see Ross Jameson in the other corner when he steps through the ropes at the Venue in Dudley,

Jameson's last outing saw him last all six rounds, taking a share of one session, against the son of former world champion Nigel Benn.

'Rosco' will now travel to the Black Country to tackle Jones, who will have new coach Spencer McCracken in his corner for the first time with manager Kellie Maloney watching at ringside.

Jones was one of the reasons Maloney, formerly known as Frank, came back into management after completing a gender reassignment.

The Venue, on Dudley's High Street, once again hosts paid pugilists under the PJ Promotions banner, with fireworks expected from 'Blaze' on the evening before Bonfire Night.

Jones' last contest may have been five months ago, but it was named won the Best Fight award at the British Boxing Board of Control's Midlands area ceremony.

The 25-year-old super lightweight and debutant Irvin Magno could not be parted after they touched gloves on May 14, referee Terry O'Connor scoring the bout a 38-38 draw.

It remains Jones' previous outing and the nearest thing to a blemish on his recorded after six contests, which have yielded five wins with one TKO.

He's preparing for action as paid pugilism returns to the Venue after an absence of exactly seven months.

Tipton's Ricky Summers topped the last bill on March 4 and outpointed gatekeeper Carl Wild in a coming-of-age test after eight rounds.

'Digger' features over six against Chris Nixon in his first outing since, as he looks to close in on a major title shot at light heavyweight next year. All of the other fights are four-rounders.

Andrew Robinson – like Summers, a graduate of Lions Boxing Club in Dudley – withdrew from the line-up to challenge Lee Markham for the English middleweight title on November 25.

Nixon has seven wins and seven losses from 14 contests of pro experience. He's been stopped three times himself.

The rugged campaigner from Stoke-on-Trent, 30, has halted two of his adversaries, though, which includes a third round KO win over Darren Snow last time out.

Summers, now 29, has his '0' to protect after racking up a flawless 11-fight paid record. He has 11 victories, with four inside-the-distance.

He trains with the pro section at Priory Park Boxing Club in Dudley, as does stable-mate Les Byfield who also competes at the Venue.

'The Minefield' will be taking on Ricky Leach at super featherweight, coming down to a four-rounder from the six that had been scheduled with Harvey Hemsley.

Rowley Regis' Tyler Denny is looking to snap the rarity of two draws in a row when he takes on tough Welsh-based Pole Robert Studzinski.

Denny, 25, remains undefeated at middleweight and will be looking to build another winning run. He had three straight victories since turning over, prior to the draws.

Birmingham's Kane Baker, 26, faces a learning curve as he takes on the most experienced pro in the country for his second paid affair at super lightweight.

The brawler from Bartley Green debuted by outpointing hard-man Dan Carr in July and now tackles Kristian Laight, aged 36 and competing in his 252nd paid contest.

Another new face to PJ Promotions' events is welterweight CJ Challenger, from Leicester, who has been likened to British champion Tyrone Nurse.

Challenger, first names Courtney Jerome, first punched for pay with a points verdict over grizzled former Midlands titlist Kevin McCauley.

The 21-year-old, who is led by Jason McClory, is a distant relative of former professional high jumper Ben Challenger and Showaddywaddy drummer Romeo Challenger.

CJ will step through the ropes with experienced former Czech national title contender Michal Vosyka, 32, in the latter's 36th pro run-out.

Tickets, priced at £35 and £50 ringside, are still available from promoter Paul 'PJ' Rowson on 07976 283 157 and can be bought on the door.
