Elite plans on hold for Telford Tigers

But there are no plans to make the leap to the country's top competition The Elite League on the back of it in the short term.

Tigers need just one point from their games against Peterborough and Basingstoke on Saturday and Sunday respectively to be mathematically certain of lifting their first championship in 27 years.

And Scholes, who headed a takeover of the club by Red Hockey Limited in October 2013, said: "We don't have any serious plans for the next year or two to change where we play.

"We have had conversations with the Elite League before but they have to invite you.

"You can't approach them. It is one of those things where they want to see that you have got two or three years of really good solid success.

"They want to see that it is sustainable and that you are up to a certain standard, and then they will reach out.

"At that point, it's a discussion that we will have but right now we are pretty happy where we are.

"Right now we'd like to make sure we are sure and steady and for the next couple of years we focus on doing things the right way and making sure there is a really good structure in place.

"I'd never say never.

"We always consider every option that comes on to the table but the priority is to create more success and make sure it is sustainable."

Telford have enjoyed a remarkable turn around to reach their current position.

They are also in the running to win the play-offs as well as to lift the Challenge Cup this season.

When Scholes came into the club, they were sitting at the wrong end of the table.

And he would like to see them continue to challenge on all three fronts in their current league for the time being.

He said: "We had a couple of different goals when we first came into hockey. The first was to just stabilise the team and get it onto an even keel with the rest of the teams around the country.

"The second thing was you have to bring in a team that can compete. And the underpinning of that is that we want to win the league, the play-offs and the Challenge Cup.

"We wanted to win all three of them, an in terms of my own personal goals I would like to see that continue for a couple of years.

"We are really focused on getting to the end of this season and making sure we have done the right things this season."

He added that the club, whose second-string side team have won promotion from the NIHL Laidler Conference this season, was also keen to develop it's junior system in the coming years.
