Every year, Castle Players fill Bishop’s Castle’s SpArC theatre for three performances of what is widely seen as one of the funniest pantos in the UK today.

There are five evil witches in the Witchy bunch.

Belladonna, the wicked witch of Craven Arms. She is often to be found riding her broomstick around Harry Tuffins, hurling abuse at customers and putting spells on the shopping trolleys so that the wheels never all go in the same direction. She is not a very exciting witch.

There is Cruella, the wicked witch of Stoke on Trent. She is rarely to be seen in Shropshire as she had a work cut out putting curses on the M6 Motorway to make the traffic slower and slower. She captures all the drivers’ frustration and anger to make her look younger and more beautiful. Most people say it isn’t working.

There is Margarine, the wicked witch of the east. Margarine, yes, not Marjorie, her mother wanted to call her Flora, but her father, an evil wizard, wanted a name that would make her stand out in a crowd. Margarine didn’t use a wand, all her magic was held in her rather beautiful ruby slippers. Margarine was horrible. She had conquered Munchkin land and was making all the Munchkins do her evil bidding, including washing her disgusting, dirty, smelly underwear.

There is Gladys, the Wicked witch of ‘oop North. Gladys is probably the nicest witch of all of the witchy bunch. She really fancies the wizard of Oz and wants to make him her boyfriends but apart from that, all she really wants is an easy life and possibly a new basket for her bicycle, however she is caught up in the swirling mass of evil that the other witches have created.

And there is Blodwen, the Wicked witch of Wales. Blodwen is by far the most evil of all witches.  It was her spells that made the Welsh government introduce the 20 mph speed limit and made people think that Llanfairpwllgwyn…err LlanfairPG was a real place.  It is said that somewhere deep inside, Blodwen is something of a romantic, but anyone that has got close to her will either turn into a car park or a banana.

All this and more can be seen at the SpArC theatre in Bishop's Castle on Friday, 14 February, 7pm, and Saturday, 15 February, 2pm and 7pm.
