History group to host talk on the early development of Wem and Newport
On Friday, 14 February, Oswestry & Border History & Archaeology Group (OBHAG) will welcome Dr Judith Everard to give a talk on the early development of Wem and Newport, and the contrast between the two - Wem situated close to the Welsh border, defended by its castle, Newport near to the county border with Staffordshire, centred on its market.
Dr Judith Everard has worked for several years on the Victoria County History for Shropshire, focussing on the towns of Wem and Newport, and on other aspects of the county’s history. She is currently Senior Research Associate at the School of History & Art History at the University of East Anglia, working on Richard, earl of Cornwall (1209-1272); she is also Assistant Editor of the academic journal the English Historical Review.
The talk will take place at the Methodist Church Hall, Castle Street, Oswestry, starting at 7.30pm. New members and visitors are always very welcome at these monthly talks; there is a small entry fee: OBHAG members £2, visitors £5.
Full details of Oswestry & Border History & Archaeology Group’s activities including its monthly talks and lectures, and summer walks and visits are available on the group’s website at obhag.org.uk.
